Contract Detail

1.PROVIDE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT INCLUDING THE PROJECT GOAL(S) AS WELL AS AN OVERVIEW OF THE ACTIVITIES THE REQUESTED VISTAS AND LEADERS WILL PERFORM. THE VISTA PROGRAM WE ARE PROPOSING IS TO SUPPORT AND EXPAND THE CAPACITY OF THE SUMMER BRIDGE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM . THIS PROGRAM INVOLVES HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE HAWAII ACADEMIES CONSORTIUM WORKING ON BUILDING ACADEMIC SKILLS OF TRANSITIONING STUDENTS (8TH TO 9TH GRADE AND HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE). IN ADDITION, MORE EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT ON COLLEGE AND CAREERS USING COMMUNITY RESOURCES SUCH AS THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES, UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. BECAUSE OF THE RECENT OPIOID EPIDEMIC, THE PROGRAM WILL ALSO ADDRESS DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION AND EDUCATION. WE ARE APPLYING FOR ONE FULL-TIME VISTA MEMBER WHO WILL DEVELOP TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO ENABLE THE SCHOOLS TO IMPLEMENT SUCCESSFUL SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAMS. ASIDE FROM THE FULL-TIME VISTA MEMBER, IF THE OPPORTUNITY BECOMES AVAILABLE, WE WILL ALSO REQUEST SUMMER ASSOCIATES TO ASSIST AS TUTORS DURING THE PROGRAM. DURATION OF THE PROGRAM WILL BE 4-6 WEEKS (DEPENDING UPON THE CAPABILITIES AT EACH SCHOOL). EMPHASIS: (1) BRIDGE ACADEMICS WITH REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS; (2) DEVELOP STUDY SKILLS (ORGANIZATION, NOTE TAKING, EXTENDED RESPONSE FORMAT); (3) DEVELOP PERSONAL AWARENESS ON LEARNING STYLES AND INTERESTS AS WELL AS LIFE SKILLS; (4) DEVELOP RESILIENCY SKILLS TO HELP WITH TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL; (5) AWARENESS AND PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE; AND (6) FOCUS ON COLLEGE AND CAREER AWARENESS THROUGH EXTENDED LEARNING EXPERIENCES STUDENTS TARGETED WILL BE INCOMING 9TH GRADERS AS WELL AS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TAKING COLLEGE CLASSES. MOST OF THE SCHOOLS ARE IN POVERTY AREAS AND EFFORTS TO HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND IS OUR ANTI-POVERTY FOCUS.
