THE TRANSMIT KA-BAND FREQUENCIES OF NASA TDRSS SATELLITES GO UP TO 27.5-GHZ AND ARE ADJACENT TO THE COMMERCIAL KABAND SATELLITE FREQUENCIES STARTING AT 27.5-GHZ, SO THIS SINGLE KA-BAND FLIGHT TERMINAL WILL BE ABLE TO TUNE TO BOTH THE NASA TDRSS AND COMMERCIAL KA-BAND SATELLITE FREQUENCIES. THIS KA-BAND FLIGHT TERMINAL WILL BE SHOWN TO HAVE A LOWER SIZE, WEIGHT, AND POWER (SWAP) TO THE EXISTING NASA BALLOON SATCOM TERMINALS. A RELATIVELY LOW-COST 2-DIMENSIONAL ELECTRONIC BEAMFORMING ANTENNA WILL BE TESTED FOR ITS CAPABILITY TO POINT A HIGH-GAIN ANTENNA BEAM AT THE EXISTING COMMERCIAL OR TDRSS KA-BAND SATELLITES IN GEOSTATIONARY ORBIT (GEO) AS THE TERRESTRIAL BALLOON IS MOVING SLOWLY IN RELATION TO THOSE GEO SATELLITES. IGF::OT::IGF MULTI-PURPOSE VARIABLE-GRAVITY PLATFORM THE MVP IS DESIGNED PRIMARILY FOR LIFE AND MICROGRAVITY SCIENCES RESEARCH ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS). IT ACCOMMODATES MULTIPLE EXPERIMENT MODULES WHICH PROVIDES 2-LEVELS OF CONTAINMENT WITH STANDARDIZED MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL INTERFACES WHICH MAY BE ACCESSED ON ORBIT OR CONTROLLED REMOTELY OR VIA A PRE-PROGRAMMED TIMELINE. THE POTENTIAL USES OF THE MVP ARE NUMEROUS SUCH AS CELL CULTURE, DROSOPHILA, AQUATICS, PLANTS, ALGAE, INVERTEBRATE ORGANISMS AND PROTEIN CRYSTAL GROWTH. THE MVP OFFERS TWO INDEPENDENTLY CONTROLLED CENTRIFUGES AS WELL AS HEATING, COOLING, HUMIDITY CONTROL, CO2 SCRUB, ETHYLENE SCRUB AND VIDEO OBSERVATION. THE MVP FACILITY WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO ISS IN A COMMON LAUNCH CARRIER, SUCH AS THE SPACEX DRAGON VEHICLE. THE FACILITY WILL BE SOFT STOWED IN FOAM LINED CARGO TRANSFER BAG FOR LAUNCH. THE MVP FACILITY WILL BE OPERATED FROM AN EXPRESS RACK LOCATION. FOR EXPERIMENT OPERATIONS, THE UNIQUE SPECIMEN CONTAINERS WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO ISS FOR EACH SPECIFIC RESEARCH INVESTIGATION. AFTER THE SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE COMPLETE, THE UNIQUE SPECIMEN CONTAINERS WILL THEN BE TRANSPORTED BACK TO EARTH WHILE THE MVP FACILITY REMAINS ON ORBIT. LOX/LCH4 PROPULSION SYSTEMS MAY REDUCE SPACE VEHICLE DESIGN COMPLEXITY AND INERT MASS BY UTILIZING COMMODITIES COMMON WITH OTHER VEHICLE SYSTEMS (E.G., OXYGEN FOR LIFE-SUPPORT SYSTEMS, METHANE FOR SOLID-OXIDE FUEL CELL POWER). METHANE CAN BE PRODUCED THROUGH THE SABATIER PROCESS FROM CO2 AND WATER RECOVERED FROM SPACECRAFT LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND, OR IN-SITU RESOURCE UTILIZATION TECHNOLOGIES. SPACEX, BLUE ORIGIN, AND OTHER COMPANIES ARE DEVELOPING METHANE/OXYGEN ENGINES FOR LAUNCH VEHICLES. ALL TYPES OF LIQUID OXYGEN/LIQUID METHANE ENGINES NEED TO BE PROVIDED WITH SAFE AND RELIABLE IGNITION SYSTEMS. THE MAJORITY OF CURRENT IGNITION SYSTEMS USE HEAVY SPARK TORCH IGNITERS. SPARK TORCH IGNITER SYSTEMS REQUIRE HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRONICS TO GENERATE THE SPARK WHICH MAY INTERFERE WITH OTHER SPACECRAFT ELECTRONICS. CATALYTIC IGNITION SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES ENERGY REQUIREMENTS IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER METHODS. PLASMA PROCESSES PROPOSES AN INVESTIGATION OF THERMO-CATALYTIC IGNITION OF CRYOGENIC METHANE-OXYGEN AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN IGNITION SYSTEM USING INNOVATIVE NANOCRYSTAL CATALYSTS ON HIGH TEMPERATURE METAL FOAMS.
